MICE will start its 20th edition with the presentation of the digitised version of the Galician cinema’s pioneering film O carro e o home.

The original film was created in 1940 with Xocas and Antonio Román as scriptwriters. The film is an account of the life with the cart as a symbol of traditional Galician material culture. It is a piece strongly influenced by Soviet cinema and Flaherty’s work. The actors and actresses are the villagers of Facós, in the Ourense municipality of Lobeira, where Xocas was from.

In 1980, the ethnographer from Ourense, together with the filmmaker Eloy Lozano and Museo do Pobo Galego financial support, created a new editing with a less folkloric sound, with text and voice by Xocas. This second version, recently digitised in collaboration with AGADIC and the Galician Film Archive, will be the highlight of the MICE opening session. It is an act of tribute to people who started Galician cinema and saw it as an opportunity to contribute to the country’s cultural heritage.

The screening will feature the participation of Pepe Coira, Galician cinema historian and expert on the film and the work of its creators.
