As a parallel activity, the 16th Mostra Internacional de Cinema Etnográfico (MICE) hosts the ONS SOA exhibition, curated by the archaeologist and ethnographer Paula Ballesteros-Arias and based on her fieldwork on the Ons Island. The exhibition showcases a selection of pieces that come from her research at the Instituto de Ciencias do Patrimonio (Incipit) of the CSIC between 2009 and 2013, along with her own materials that she collected between the late 80s and 2016. An approach to everyday life through the traces of the past that takes us back to Prehistory and the testimonies of people living on the island at the time of her research. The exhibition is an autoethnographic account which summarizes the anthropologist’s concerns and impressions of the cultural heritage of Ons Island. A practical –and sensory– sample of visual anthropology, the exhibition will be open from 23rd March to  30th May, 2021 at the Museo do Pobo Galego.

The narrative discourse takes the form of a round trip through images and soundscapes. The ONS SOA exhibition consists of 19 photographs and other audiovisual documents. The images represent life stories, stories of a community that shaped the island itself and coexisted with these stones with total respect, endowing a huge symbolism to the spaces, with numerous myths and legends associated with them.

Paula Ballesteros: Historian, trained as an anthropologist and archaeologist, has focused her research work on the chronological stages and training processes that have given rise to the current agricultural landscape of Galicia. She has also been part of projects on participatory medicine to catalogue intangible heritage or in the project “Processes of change and training in the cultural landscape of the National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia” (2011-2013) at the Incipit CSIC. She currently combines theatre and acting with the knowledge acquired in the field of Social Sciences. Since 2020 she has been a member of the Comisión Técnica de Informes en Patrimonio e Bens Culturais of the Consello da Cultura Galega (CCG).
